I've spent ⅔ of my life straightening rugs on the floor. It almost became a law of nature that as we walk on them, rugs move and you have to straighten them any number of times a week, depending on the traffic.
A very few times I've skated on any small rug while running around, worrying about my hips! I even thought that come old age, I'd have to give up on runners and mats, very much against my taste in home decor.
One thing is for sure: after a while, the backing of the rug, if it's not as smooth as ice (which would make it yet more slippery), will create micro scratches on hardwood, laminate and tile, resulting in an opaque area on the flooring, right where most pressure had been applied by traffic.
So for years I've been looking for the best way to stabilize my rugs on any type of flooring, be it hardwood, laminate, tile, carpet, etc.
A few weeks ago I made this great discovery while checking things out in Ikea. It's a very thin, slightly sticky felt. You position it under your rug and it will hold it in place like the best glue, until you decide to remove it, which is as easy as lifting the rug. The floor remains unblemished and so do your hips and your patience. 😉
You can find it in Ikea in the rugs area (MSRP $7.99) or online. It comes in a 4'×6'1" piece, folded flat in a plastic bag, and you either cut or double it, depending on the size of your rug. I recommend cutting the felt a bit smaller than the rug, 1"-2" in from all the edges.
